Old Testament/Stories of Solomon and the kings and prophets who followed him. I Kings 20:33ff

So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.

And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, I went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then it will be your life for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver. And as I was busy here and there, the man slipped away.

And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall your judgment be; you have decided it.

Then the prophet quickly took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets. And he said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.'"

So the king of Israel went to his house . . . . .

"Where is the hope? I meet millions who tell me that they feel demoralized by the decay around us. Where is the hope? The hope that each of us have is not in who governs us, or what laws are passed, or what great things that we do as a nation. Our hope is in the power of God working through the hearts of people, and that's where our hope is in this country; that's where our hope is in life." - Chuck Colson

Old Testament/Stories of Solomon and the kings and prophets who followed him. I Kings 20:33ff

…..Then Ben-hadad came to Ahab; and Ahab had him to come up into his chariot. And Ben-hadad said unto him, “The cities, which my father took from your father, I will restore; and you may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria." Ahab said, "On the basis of a treaty I will set you free." So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbor in the word of the LORD, "Strike me with your weapon," but the man refused. Then said he unto him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as you have departed from me, a lion will kill you”. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him. Then he found another man, and said, "Strike me with your weapon." So the man struck him and wounded him.

So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the road,  . . . .

Why did the prophet want a man to strike and wound him? Why did he wait beside the road for the king? [NOTE - There was a stiff penalty for not obeying the words of the prophet]

And his servants said unto him, We have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us put sackcloth around our waists, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: perhaps he will allow you to live.

So they put sackcloth around their waists, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Ben-Hadad has asked if you will let him live? And the king of Israel said, “Is he yet alive? He is my brother”. The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. "Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!" they said. And do this thing, Take the kings away, and put captains in their place: And gather an army like the army that you lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he listened unto their voice, and did so. And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.

And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like ______ small flocks of _______; but the Syrians filled the country.

And there came a man of God, and he spoke unto the king of Israel, and said, This is what the Lord says, Because the Arameans have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD. And they camped opposite each other for seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle took place: and the children of Israel slew of the Arameans, a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: And call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answers by fire, let him be God. As the LORD thy God lives, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in your hand.

And she said, As the LORD thy God lives, I have no bread, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a jar: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and fix it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as you have said: but make me a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and afterwards make some for you and for your son. For this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives ______ on the ________.'"

Photo For 09/07/2013

We are now in the southwest part of Colorado on a trip around the ghost town of Ironton near Ouray, Colorado. Some of these photos were shot in the summer and some in the fall. Looking through a window in an abandoned house.
