Our next stop was at the waterfall and wildflower area. It had been a goal of mine to be able to walk down to the falls and get some pictures (20 years ago you could drive down but it has been closed to motorized vehicles for many years now) so with two trekking poles and my camera we headed to the waterfalls. Unfortunately with my legs there was no way I could get into a position to get the upper falls so I opted to walk down to the lower falls. While it was a difficult walk for me I did manage to get a few good shots of the lower falls. The biggest PTL is that I was able to do the walk without getting hurt!

Another half mile or so above the cliff hanger we pass the Imogene Pass turnoff, and eventually come the remains of the ghost town of Sneffels and the Revenue Mill and Tunnel. Sneffels was founded in 1875 (originally called “Porters”) and had a peak population of about 2,000. The Revenue Tunnel supplied access to the Virginius Mine that once had 600 workers and produced gold and silver worth one billion dollars in today’s market.

The road up to Yankee Boy Basin is a good graded dirt road until you go beyond the Camp Bird Mine. From there on the road slowly becomes rougher and rougher. About a half mile or so from the Camp Bird Mine the road is literally cut into a cliff where a rock ledge hangs almost completely over the vehicle. It is also a cliff hanger road at this point.
