Here is a shot I took at St. Elmo in 1970. Specifically you can see the Miner’s Exchange. Tomorrow we will see a photo of it as it looked this summer. Gold and Silver Mining brought many people to this area. There were over 150 Patented mine claims in the St. Elmo area with a peak population of approximately 2,000.

The old City Hall in St. Elmo as it looked in 2001…unfortunately when we went back in 2003 it and the building next to it had burnt to the ground destroying all the city documents that have next been copied. St. Elmo was officially founded in October of 1880. It was originally called Forest City because of the abundant amount of evergreen trees at the site. However, since California already had a town by the same name the name was changed to St. Elmo. The new name was derived by Griffith Evans, one of the founders, who was reading a romantic nineteenth-century novel by the same name.

Not far from Mt. Antero is the old town of St. Elmo. This town certainly exemplifies the looks of a typical old west town. …..I can remember a time back in the 1970’s when you would only see a car or two at St. Elmo and not a single store open...but today it is a boom town! There was barely room to park. The above picture was shot in 2001…Where cars weren’t lining the street!!!

Headed down from Mt. Antero, looking towards the southeast..That is the road in front of us. We lived in Poncha Springs for a short time in the late 50’s when I was in the seventh grade. During that time my dad had his 1939 Chevy pickup up to the mine….that is when they were actively working the mine and the road was not as rough as it is today.

Another view from the end of the 4WD road on Mt. Antero. Looking towards the north you cannot tell we are in the path of a major lightning storm. Mt. Antero is said to be one of the best places in the United States for mineral and gem collecting. Some of the best specimens of aquamarine ever found came from the mineral fields at the top of this mountain. Gem quality smoky quartz and blue beryl can make this trip a rock hounding adventure of a lifetime!

At the end of the 4WD road on Mt. Antero… By the time we got to the summit storm clouds and lightning were moving in and at 13,885 feet on top of a mountain one thing you don’t want is lightning! We shot a few pictures and then turned around and started back down. Cameron (my eight year old grandson) covered up his windows in the back with a blanket over the roll bar so he couldn’t see where we were going and was a not a happy camper for about the next hour…. :0(

Headed up up Mt. Antero. The only real concern on this trip is that the road is too narrow to pass another vehicle except at the switchbacks, so one must exercise extreme vigilance in looking at the switchbacks ahead to be sure there is not another vehicle coming.

Our route to Mt. Antero starts on the old roadbed of the Denver, South Park and Pacific railroad grade that goes up to the Alpine tunnel and beyond….we will eventually go further up the main road but a short distance past the Chalk Cliffs (shown above) we will take the 4WD road up Mt. Antero. The starting elevation of the 4WD road is 9,440 feet.

From Leadville we headed south through Buena Vista and headed straight into the mountains at Nathrop. Our destination today is to head to the top of Mt. Antero which is the tallest peak right in the center of this photo. Mount Antero is the tenth highest peak in Colorado with an elevation of 14,269 feet.

Going down my eight year old grandson, Cameron, said he was getting sick because of the drop offs so when we could we stopped and got out some…Also, he kept insisting that the mountains and trees were following us!!
