En route to the summit of Mt. McClellan we next pass the site of the old ghost town of Waldorf, Colorado The town was burnt to the ground in the early 1970’s so nothing remains today. However, I did get some black and white photos of the town in 1971 and using those photos and a photo taken by a photographer friend, Ron Ruhoff I built the above diorama of the town. An article about how I built the models and the diorama was published in the Jan/Feb issue of the Narrow Gauge and Short Gazette (model railroad magazine). The building that is second from the far end was the Post Office which was said to be at an elevation of 11,666 feet…the highest in the United States.

For a little while we are going to take a trip to Colorado. Today we are starting a trip to the summit of Mt. McClellan (near Georgetown). For most of the trip we are going to follow the roadbed of the long abandoned Argentine Central (narrow gauge) Railroad. But make no mistake about it……… the “shortcuts” between the switchbacks are definitely four wheel drive roads, and there are definitely some real cliff hangers as we climb to an elevation of over 13,000 feet. This is a photo taken just after we left the pavement where the road crosses a small creek.
